deardarlingblog: Does it take a lot of energy from you to remain so inspired all the time, or does it flow naturally?

Reading The Artist’s Way has really opened my eyes to the nature of creativity. The creative flow is always there, it’s like a delicate child, we just have nurture it and not beat it down or force it. It thrives on excitement, at least for me. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m trying to only work on things that are exciting for me. And that can change within the scope of one piece, even minute by minute. The moment I start feeling frustrated, I leave it alone. I step away and work on something else. That doesn’t mean abandoning it, just giving it and myself a chance to breathe, then coming back to it with fresh eyes later, whether that’s in 10 minutes, an hour, or a week. I’m all about working through the difficult times, but sometimes that means letting go and coming back when you’re not so invested in it and can see properly. (This, of course, applies to any area of life.) Goddamn making art is a lot of work, it’s kind of like being in love. It’s horrible and beautiful and amazing and devastating and exciting all at the same time.
